“The Wind of Change” is part of an on-going fundraising initiative Learn Afgan (learnafghan.org) and is inspired by Carlos Ruiz Zafón’s “The Cemetery of Forgotten Books”. The project aims to combine the love for literature with a commitment to empowering and supporting girls’ education in Afghanistan. The fundraising event and the project draw parallels between the power of books
in awakening imagination, lifting the spirits and building confidence and motivation for change and action.

Located in Barcelona, on the C/Del Arc del Teatre 55, “The Wind of Change” was a secret room just off the busy Las Ramblas, where the audience could gather in a candle-lit interior and interact with the performative pop up installation. The design of the space was inspired by the description of interiors of “The Cemetery of Forgotten Books”. The room veiled in the ghostly atmosphere of all the previous owners of the books invited the audience to immerse in the ambience. Individuals could interact with the set and performers, and wander around the labyrinth of bookshelves.

A voluntary donation was encouraged in an exchange for a chosen book which included authors such as Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Wirginia Wolf, George Orwell, Pablo Neruda, Simone de Beauvoir. The funds generated will contribute directly to the fundraising initiative Learn Afgan.
To continue with the event in the virtual space, we are currently working enabling online donations in exchange for a book chosen from a list that would be shipped to a given address.
